Santísima Macarena |
أقدس مكرين

Clear acrylic hung in front of plywood, both laser engraved with Glowforge Pro laser cutter. Acrylic layer engraved with edited version of Antonio Jaén Sanchez’s photo of La Virgen de Macarena, one of the most important images of the Virgin Mary in Spain. La Macarena takes her name from the neighborhood around her, which itself is the namesake of the principal gate in the thousand year old Almoravid Islamic dynastic walls — the Bab Al-Makrin مكرين. Wood layer engraved with edited version of Caty V. Mazorias Antoranz’s photo of La Puerta de Córdoba, another gate in the walls.

Originally developed for the 5th Annual ATEC Pop-Up Locker Art Exhibition at UT Dallas. An experiment in alternative presentation of photography from Macarena, Sevilla, Andalucía; and a visual exploration of the methods by which some histories are marginalized—covered up—erased—overwritten by others.
